It was a score more likely seen in a football game than baseball as the Moose Jaw Miller Express and Regina Red Sox lit up the scoreboard on Wednesday night at Currie Field.

Regina came away with a 19-13 win over Moose Jaw in a Western Major Baseball League slugfest.

The Red Sox jumped out to a 12-0 lead after three innings, but the Millers wouldn’t go away, but they were never able to find a way past Regina in the loss.

Left fielder Cole Warken hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning, while centre fielder Travis Able, right fielder Cutter McDowell and third baseman Lane Harvey picked up three hits each in the loss.

The game started slowly with neither team getting a base-runner in the first inning, but the Red Sox exploded for eight runs in the second inning before adding four more in the third.

The Millers went to work in the fourth, scoring seven runs in the frame, including a two-run triple by first baseman Adam Cook. Second baseman Scott Platt also brought in a run with a double in the frame.

Moose Jaw’s biggest issue in the game was allowing Regina to respond every time they scored as Regina extended their lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

In the seventh, McDowell hit a run-scoring double to left field and then came around to score on a single from catcher Zach Fascia, which cut the Red Sox’s lead back down to five. Regina answered with another run in the home half of the inning.

Warken’s three-run homer, his fourth this season, in the eighth cut Regina’s lead down to three runs, but the Red Sox struck back with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull back in front big.

Zach McDonald took the loss on the mound for Moose Jaw, allowing eight runs – seven earned – on six hits over 1+ innings of work. He struck out one and walked one.

The Millers turned to Arman Lakhani in the second inning. He came in and gave up six runs on four hits and three walks over two innings.

Mitchell Price and Galen Andrews combined to throw three innings of shutout relief to slow down the Red Sox a bit. They each struck out two, while Price gave up two hits and walked a pair.

Travis Edgar allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout in the seventh and Ben Dalke surrendered four runs on four hits and two walks in the eighth.

The loss drops Moose Jaw (15-13) four games back of the Red Sox (18-8) for top spot in the WMBL’s Eastern Division.

These two teams will meet again on Thursday night at Currie Field as the Millers wrap-up a nine-game road swing. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Moose Jaw will return to the friendly confines of Ross Wells Park on Friday night to host the Swift Current 57s. They also welcome in Yorkton on Saturday and Regina on Sunday.
