The Moose Jaw Midget AAA Warriors tried to learn about the value of focus Sunday afternoon in an 8-1 win over the Beardy's Blackhawks.

The Warriors went up 6-0 early in the game and spent the rest of the game trying to play with the same amount of intensity.

Warriors head coach Trevor Weisgerber said team didn't have to play with a lot of intensity in the final 40 minutes with the huge lead.

“Those games are tough to play that,” Weisgerber said. “You just talk about habits, and you want to make sure that we’re doing things properly and then go from there.”

Austin Reschny and Matt Perkins each scored a pair in the first period, with Connor McGrath also scoring two in the game. Parker Jasper added three assists. Chase Coward stopped 29 shots in the win.

Weisgerber said the focus is to stay in first place for the rest of the season.

“We’ve talked about it now, that that’s our goal here, to finish the season in first,” he said. “The biggest thing is obviously if you can get through round one and maybe there’s an upset in round two, and then you maybe you get someone who is possibly not a top seed in that second round. But it’s big. And that’s our goal right now. And we’re just going to keep rolling along.”

With a little over a month to go in the season, the Warriors enter this week four points in front of the Saskatoon Blazers and Regina Pat Canadians.

They defeated the Tisdale Trojans 6-3 Saturday. Connor McGrath scored two, while Atley Calvert and Perkins chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Coward stopped 21 shots between the pipes.

The Warriors’ next game is Thursday at Notre Dame against the Hounds.
