Moose Jaw's favourite Megan Nash riding high right now as she is up for "Alternative Artist of the Year" as the Saskatchewan Music Awards.

"Of course I was surprised and happy, I thought it was neat that I was nominated as alternative. I thought 'okay, that's kind of cool,' I think it's a label that has a lot of freedom to it," Nash said. "There's not a lot of limitations when you're being referred to as alternative."

Nash realized other people already considered her as an "alternative" artist but she just tries to be honest with herself and her songs. Considering herself a singer/songwriter seemed a little vague but if being "alternative" works for the music industry then it works for her.

This is actually the inaugural year of the Saskatchewan Music Awards, which Nash said adds to the honour. She also finds that it shows that Saskatchewan artists have been seeing a lot of success in recent years, with a number of performers touring around Canada, the United States, Europe, and other places around the world.

In her category, Nash will be going up against Bears in Hazenmore, Close Talker, Nick Faye and The Deputies, and The Garrys. All of whom Nash is familiar with.

"If you win it, great, if you don't, you still had a nomination, like the nomination is really the nod I feel like. I'm going up against friends, every single person in that category I've done shows with and I listen to everyone's music. Every single person in that category, I love their music so it's just an honour and if the other people win that's totally cool because they're my friend."

At the awards this Sunday, Nash will not only be performing at the show at The Exchange in Regina but at the after party with Bears in Hazenmore as her back up band.

Nash is also up for a nomination for "Breakout Artist of the Year" at the Western Canadian Music Awards and her music video "Bad Poetry" was up for "Best Short Film" at the Saskatchewan Independent Film Award, which was this Friday, but her video lost out to Mike Rollo’s Farewell Transmission.

Also recently announced, Nash has a show with Bears in Hazenmore on January 12th, 2019 in downtown Gravelbourg which she announced on Monday.

"Thank you Moose Jaw and surrounding community for the ongoing support. I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for that support and thank you for listening [to my music]."
