Some immigrants hoping to call Canada home in the future will now be subject to a more thorough screening in advance. Starting this summer, those from overseas that are applying for semi or low-skilled positions will first be assessed for their listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities.

Moose Jaw Multicultural Council Executive Director Randy Belon believes our province needs more workers coming from out of country but believes there are limits. "An open door policy where everyone can come in is not economically, culturally or socially feasibly either so there is that very blurry line and it can change."

The cost of the tests will be the responsibility of the applicant or prospective employer. The changes take effect July 1st and will not affect workers already approved prior.
