The Moose Jaw Police Service have recently responded to a number of calls for stabbings in Moose Jaw. That begs the question - has there actually been an increase in these types of incidents?

In the past month, officers have responded to a handful of serious and separate incidents where the victims had been stabbed.

According to the Police Service, they can confirm that there have been more stabbings as of late but don't believe this will be a part of an ongoing trend.

"For January and February, we did see a little bit more activity than the norm for those types of incidents," explained Sgt. Kevin Pilsworth. "Hopefully, that's just a small cluster and it's not a trend that we're going to see continue for the rest of 2019, but we'll be paying close attention and we're ready to respond accordingly."

With these cases all still open and undergoing court proceedings, there isn't much the police can share as they can't comment on open investigations. Sgt. Pilsworth added that once they've wrapped up in the judicial system they may have more information to share, such as if these incidents were connected or if there were common mitigating factors.

"Once they are dealt with we can kind of do a bit of analysis and share with the public some more information. At this point, we can't really comment too much on the causality side of it. We want to make sure the public's mind is at ease though, in a sense that we don't see this as a trend and the public doesn't need to be worried."

He noted that the public always plays an important role in helping with investigations. Officers don't want civilians to get involved; however, they do appreciate any information about the crime or suspicious activity they may have heard or seen that can be passed along to investigators and police.

"If you see suspicious activity or if you see someone that looks like they're in trouble or needs help, by all means, please pull over as soon as possible and give us a phone call to let us know what's going on so we can get there as quickly as we can. We've been very fortunate - we've had some very good support and help from the community and we're looking forward to the people of Moose Jaw helping us out in 2019 as well."

Sgt.Pilsworth noted that despite the cold moving in and sticking around for the past few weeks, this hasn't slowed down crime.
