It's a short season, but the top players showed they were in top form on Tuesday during the Moose Jaw High School Senior Badminton Championship tournament at Peacock Collegiate.

The Cornerstone Falcons came away with their first ever team championship, while five different schools had athletes capture gold medals in the five divisions.

Cornerstone's Kenzie Behrns had dominated the competition throughout the past few weeks during league nights and that didn't change during the city championship on Tuesday.

Behrns won in two sets (21-11, 21-9) over Central's Katie Coulson to capture the girls singles gold medal.

"To be in grade nine and win [the senior title], it's pretty crazy," said Behrns after the match.

"Katie Coulson is really good and she was tough competition in the gold medal game."

Behrns went 3-0 during the round robin, only having double-digit points scored against her in one set. She was tested in the semi-final, winning 21-15 and 21-9 over Vanier's Jenna Meili, who ended up taking the bronze medal.

"I have four amazing coaches, they come to every practice and work one-on-one with me, they're great," she said.

Vanier's Hayden Ma captured the gold medal in the boys singles division, beating Cornerstone's Joel Goddard in two sets (23-21, 21-17) during a tightly contested final.

Ma said Goddard really tested him, "I was pretty confident until the gold medal match, Joel played really good," he said. "He didn't play that good in the second and third league nights, but he played really good tonight."

Ma went 3-0 during the round robin and then came away with a two-set win (21-13, 21-16) over Central's Spencer Newans in the semi-final. Newans would go on to lose to Peacock's Cole Morash in the bronze medal game.

The Central team of Dream Perez and Alex Yee picked up the gold medal in the mixed doubles division. They beat Peacock's Des Rader and Gauge Adams in two close sets (21-18, 21-17) in the final.

Perez said that they were tested throughout the tournament, "We were in control of some matches and some not, but that's a good thing," she said.

The bronze medal went to Cornerstone's Javan Atkins and Aki Nuboka, who beat teammates, Caleb Kaminski and Erica Kaminski.

In the girls doubles division, Peacock's Caitlin Miller and Serena Schlamp finished off a stellar season by beating Vanier's Claire Astrologo and Julian Gerpusco in a three-set battle (22-20, 20-22, 21-4) in the gold medal game.

Miller and Schlamp are both in grade 10 and were pretty excited about the success that they had moving up to senior this season.

"We weren't really expecting this season to be a gold medal season because we had it last year in junior but this was a really nice surprise and we worked really hard all year for it," said Schlamp.

Miller added, "At the beginning it was [difficult moving up to senior] with the split court and the whole new defence was different, but we figured it out," she said.

Cornerstone's Hinano Fuijihira and Airi Shimada won the bronze medal with a three-set win (16-21, 21-7, 21-19) over Vanier's Myriam Levesque and Ryann Handley.

Twin brothers Oliver and Xavier Bilodeau from Ecole Ducharme came away with the title in the boys doubles division. They knocked off Cornerstone’s John Ferris and Zach Beitel in the gold medal game in two sets (21-13, 21-14).

Being brothers gives the Bilodeaus some good chemistry on the court.

"We keep each other motivated, we try not to get mad at each other, we give each other advice if we lose a point, keep our heads up high and even if we lose a set, we don't give up on a rally," said Oliver Bilodeau.

The two brothers moved to Moose Jaw from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories last fall and they said they enjoyed the competition that they faced in the league.

"There's a lot more competition and some of the teams gave us a good run," said Oliver Bilodeau.

The Ecole Ducharme team won all three of their round-robin matches and then topped Vanier's Cooper Cole and Logan Hauser in the semi-final.

Cole and Hauser went on to capture the bronze medal with a three-set win (21-16, 16-21, 21-18) over Cornerstone's Ben Lewis and Noah Braun.

The South Central District Championship will be held in Caronport on Saturday.
