Moose Jaw will be getting an early taste of summer, as Environment Canada is forecasting some scorching temperatures for the beginning of the Father’s Day weekend.

Meteorologist, Sara Hoffman says that after below-normal temperatures for this time of the year, Friday and Saturday are going to heat up in a big way.

“Friday and Saturday respectively we’re forecasting well above normal; we’ll be nearly 10 degrees above normal on Saturday,” says Hoffman. “That’s going to feel even hotter because we’re not acclimatized to the warmer than normal temperatures.”

Friday is forecasted to be a high of 30 degrees, with humidex values adding another three degrees. Saturday is expected to be even hotter with a forecasted high of 33 degrees, which could even be hot enough to break a record for June 18.

“The record for June 18 is 33.9 degrees, and that was set in 1986. We’re quite close if we are higher than what we're forecasting then we will beat the record, but if we reach what we’re forecasting we won’t break the record.”

As we enter into some very hot weather, Environment Canada is reminding residents that heat affects everyone.

“It is going to feel hotter. Just to really stay hydrated, and by hydrated, I mean clear liquids, nonalcoholic clear liquids are the key way to stay hydrated, and checking in on yourself and looking for signs of heat illness like heat stroke.”

Hoffman adds that if people are going to head outside this weekend, take some time and take care of yourself.

Moose Javians will get some relief from the heat, as another low-pressure system is making its way to southwestern Saskatchewan on Sunday bringing with it more rain. Hoffman says that steady rain is expected for Moose Jaw into early next week, but couldn’t predict exactly how much will fall in the area.
