It was announced last year that SaskPower would be building a new power station on the south side of the city near Highway 2, and Moose Jaw Mayor Fraser Tolmie toured the Chinook Power Station in Swift Current last week to get a better idea

The future site of the SaskPower Power station located near the lagoons on the south side of the city, along Highway 2. of what to expect.

Mayor Tolmie toured the facility along with Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault and representatives from SaskPower.

"I was quite amazed at the site of the new Chinook Power Plant in Swift Current. My understanding is that they do want to keep it fairly similar. Obviously the technical details will be up to SaskPower, and that will be according to their designs and plans, but from all accounts, it will be very similar to the Chinook Power Plant."

Tolmie says he's excited to see the impact this plant will have on our community.

"They said 800 employees working there to construct it, and that's going to really impact our rental market, our housing market, there's going to be a lot of people that's coming in from outside the community. That's going to be a huge impact on the local economy."

"There are 2 phases to this. There's the construction phase – they had alluded to about 800 people putting that power plant together. The understanding is once the power plant is built there will be 25 full-time employees working at the power plant."

Based on the similar project in Swift Current, the Friendly City's plant could be worth upwards of $750 million.
