We've been let off pretty easy these past couple months, but it looks like residents of Moose Jaw will have to pull out their shovels.

As we head into the new season, people are keeping their eyes to the windows and on the forecast to see what's to come next for the weather, and according to Environment Canada Meteorologist John Paul Cragg, its not going to be the pleasant weather people might have been expecting.

"Our models are actually showing a wetter than average and a cooler than average spring across central and southern Saskatchewan, and that's thanks in part to La Niña that's set up in the Pacific," Cragg said. "Often with La Niña strings it is quite cool or a little cooler than average and wetter than average."

According to Environment Canada, the flurries are expected to start Friday evening in Moose Jaw and not stop until Sunday. A total of 5 to 20 centimeters of precipitation could fall during this time. Alongside this potential for snow are high winds. Winds around 30 km/hr gusting to 50 km/hr could create blowing snow, but with the warm temperatures the blowing snow won't be as bad in the southwest.

The Friendly City could fall under a weather warning or advisory during this time time too. Much of Southern Alberta is under a warning and the regions surrounding Moose Jaw are either under advisory or warning.

It is expected that it will be a colder spring, but it is harder to look to what the weather will be in the season.

"As we've seen in the past and in the forecast of the season, they can both lack a lot of detail because we're talking about just a general average over the three month period, but also it can be off," Cragg explained. "So, it's important to continue to look at that forecast and look at the more predictable seven days out and be more sure of the weather you're going to expect."

You can always check the seven day forecast online for up to date details.

As for the preparedness of the City, their removal crews are on standby for the potential significant snowfall. They would like to remind residents that if required, they will start their snow removal with the Priority 1 Snow Route, which includes the area around the Wigmore Hospital. They would also like to remind everyone to obey all 'No Parking' signs on snow routes and that residences should keep a safe distance from equipment, as they have 4 graders, 2 front end loaders with blades and 2 sanding trucks on standby.
