Now in its third year, the Moose Jaw Adult Flag Football League is growing steadily each year.  They've went from 12 teams in their inaugural year to 20 teams this year.

“We're growing every year,” stated Matt Hetherington, the league vice president, on Wednesday.  “We set a maximum for 24 teams this year, we didn't quite hit it, but we have the Field House booked for three hours on Thursday nights and the reception has been really good.

“First year we had 12 teams, last year we had 18 and this year we're up to 20, so it's been going pretty good.  The first night went off without a hitch as planned, everyone is enjoying it, everyone keeps coming out, so we're happy.”

The league is a mix of teams from the summer outdoor touch league and teams that form up just for the flag league in the winter.  “It's just on Thursday nights, so it's a little bit easier for guys in the winter to get out and make that Thursday night game for an hour,” explained Hetherington.

Hetherington adds that the league has really grown through word of mouth from people who have played in previous years, “We haven't done too much (to promote it), other than just Facebook, Twitter and things like that, so it's working out really well.”

There are some differences between the touch league and the flag league – besides one being outside and the other inside – first off there are five players per side instead of seven.

“The rules promote more scoring,” said Hetherington.  “We cut the field in half, you've got three plays to get to half and then if you get over half, you've got three more plays to score.

“It's a real fast paced game and five-on-five, there's lots of bodies in a small space, so there's bodies flying all over the place and it keeps everybody real active and on their toes that's for sure.”

The league is planning on hosting a tournament again this year near the end of the season.  Week 2 goes on Thursday night at the Field House with three games at 7:00pm, four at 8:00pm and three more at 9:00pm.
