Tweaks… Fine tuning… Pushing to another level. There's many different approaches to the high school track and field mini meets here in Moose Jaw over the course of the season.

The final mini-meet went on Wednesday at Gutheridge Field, providing local athletes one more chance to work on their events before competing for real next week at the city championship meet. (Click here for full results from Wednesday's meet)

Vanier grade 11 Riley Follensbee is focusing on four events this year. He's confident in his discus and 100-metre, but feels he still has some work to do in the other two.

"I definitely need to work on hurdles, this was only my second time running a hurdles race. I need to practice high jump too, need to get that form down, haven't done it in a few years, so it should be interesting," said Follensbee.

Despite just taking up hurdles over the past few weeks, Follensbee seems to have caught on quickly as he took top spot in the junior boys race during Wednesday’s mini-meet.

He said he's still trying to figure things out about the race, "It's the timing, where my foot needs to be, not having my arms out, pretty much everything that you need to do in hurdles, I need to work on," said Follensbee.

"It's coming through, just have to practice."

Follensbee added that his goal is hit the podium in all four of his events heading into the city championship meet and then go from there. "At the Moose Jaw Invitational, I came in fourth in hurdles, but I beat the guy that was third today, so I'm optimistic," he said.

There was only two girls entered in senior girls high jump on Wednesday, but that didn't stop Ecole Ducharme senior Joanna Lynn from pushing the bar close to the meet record.

Lynn cleared her first five heights with no problem and then after missing on her first two attempts at 1.54-metres, she cleared that as well, before bowing out after three misses at 1.57m.

"I beat my personal best by three centimetres, so that was good," said Lynn.

An ankle injury a few years ago caused Lynn some issues coming into this year, but she said she's happy with how her jumping has gone so far this year.

"It still hurts sometimes, but it's okay now," she said. "I love high jump, just flying over the bar is great."

The Moose Jaw city championship meet will go on Wednesday next week at Gutheridge Field.
