The Moose Jaw Chiefs were in control from start-to-finish on Saturday as they knocked off the Prince Albert Outlaws, 14-5, at Mosaic Place.

The win improves Moose Jaw’s record to 5-1 in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League’s Senior Division and has them tied with the 5-0 Regina Heat for second place.

“We have our toughest tests coming up with the Heat and the Brewers back up in Saskatoon, so this was a good performance test to see where we’re at,” said Assistant Captain Jeff Kitts, who finished with two assists in the win.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period and were rolling from there. They did a good job of capitalizing on their chances throughout the game at the offensive end, but Kitts said that there’s still work to do.

“We were a little frustrated, there was a lot of posts hit and then it feels like you’re not doing enough on offence, but I thought that we moved the ball well,” said Kitts. “There was some areas of concern that we can address easily, our transition wasn’t the greatest, but we can clean that up when we’re playing the Heat or Brewers, it brings out another level of competition.”

Todd Doepker paced the offence for Moose Jaw with four goals and five points, while Taylor Dobrescu finished with a goal and seven points in the win. Mitch Adams had two goals and four points, and Tyler Dobrescu finished with a goal and four points.

Moose Jaw never really allowed the Outlaws to gain momentum.

After taking the five-goal lead in the first period, Prince Albert came out and scored just under two minutes into the second, but the Chiefs answered right back with a goal only 12 seconds later. They would build up their lead to 9-3 after two.

The Chiefs continued to pour it on the third period with five more goals for the lopsided nine-goal win.

While they were in control for much of the game, Kitts said they need to guard against getting complacent because they know they’ve got much tougher games ahead.

“Prince Albert plays a totally different defensive style of game, so they’ll chase further out, where other teams are more restrained back and so you might develop certain habits that won’t work against other teams, but every game is different so you have to prepare differently and we did a good job of that,” he said.

The Chiefs are looking to clean up some areas defensively as the season progresses.

“Our defensive slides, so our movement,” said Kitts. “Offensive movement was pretty good, but we’ve got to make sure we’re getting good clean picks and when we get our looks, hit them, we can’t have that many posts against one of the top teams.”

Moose Jaw will return to the court on Wednesday when they host the Heat at Mosaic Place. The action starts at 7:30 p.m.
