The Moose Jaw Chiefs are heading to their fourth straight Prairie Gold Lacrosse League final after securing a big road win in the Queen City on Saturday night.

The Chiefs went into Regina and knocked off the rival Heat, 10-7, in the PGLL semifinal.

“In life, there’s nothing better than winning, but especially when you lose to a team both times you play them in the (regular) season and go upset them in their barn,” said assistant captain Jeff Kitts on Monday. “There was a good crowd there and we were able to quiet them down.”

The Chiefs had lost to the Heat 8-6 at home and 16-9 in Regina during the regular season, but that didn’t effect Moose Jaw’s confidence heading into their semifinal game.

Moose Jaw trailed 6-5 heading into the third period, but they got some timely goals and some timely goaltending in the final frame to outscore the Heat 5-1 in the frame and roll to the three-goal win.

“We knew we were going to need a few breaks to go our way,” said Kitts. “Right off the hop in the third period, we got a transition opportunity and our guy had a partial break and scored, and that was the break that we needed.”

Eric Chevrier got the offence rolling with a goal just 3:50 into the third period to tie the game at 6-6. Moose Jaw would four straight goals after that – including three in 3:47 from Carter Davis, Tanner Kittler and Tyler Dobrescu – to take a 10-6 lead and roll to the win.

Davis and Mitch Adams had two goals and four points each in the win, while Dobrescu scored twice as well and Kittler added a goal and three points. Todd Doepker and Taylor Dobrescu also scored in the win.

“It was probably the most complete team game that we’ve ever had in the Chiefs’ existence, it was every guy putting their body on the line, we had defenders blocking shots, offensive guys making the extra pass instead of taking a shot that’s not there,” said Kitts. “There was a lot of hustle and heart to make it happen.”

Taylor Roach turned in a big performance in goal, making key saves when the Chiefs needed them throughout the contest. He also chipped in with an assist.

Moose Jaw will now get ready to face the undefeated Saskatoon Brewers in a rematch of last year’s final. The Chiefs lost in three games to the Brewers last year and lost both regular season meetings, falling 13-9 at home and 14-4 in Saskatoon.

Kitts said the Chiefs are confident they can get the job done when needed.

“We’ve got to go in loose and expect the unexpected,” he said. “The Brewers bring a lot more speed and tenacity to the court, but we know their tendencies and we’ve played them hard over the last few years. As long as we have a full roster and the right match-ups, it will be a good series.”

The Chiefs will host the Brewers for Game 1 on Friday night, 8 p.m, at the Kinsmen Arena. Then the series will shift to Saskatoon for Game 2, and if necessary Game 3, on Sunday.
