All six captains from the Central Collegiate Cyclones football team will be furthering their playing careers.

Cyclones head coach Colin Belsher said usually they see two or three players further their playing career, so to see six players moving on is a rarity.

“They were part of the group that lost one of their seasons and they dedicated themselves to playing football over the spring that we held here in Moose Jaw, and I think it really benefited them,” Belsher said.

“We wish them all the luck moving forward and I know it's going to be some exciting times for them here in the next couple of years.”

Linebacker Layne Johnson and defensive back Cole Brietkruez, who attends Cornerstone Christian School by plays for Central, have committed to the University of Regina Rams program.

Sam Barth and Jake Giokas have signed with the Regina Thunder of the CJFL. While Barth will continue as a running back, Giokas played offensive line in high school, but was signed as a fullback.

Moving Giokas to fullback didn’t come as a complete surprise for Belsher.

“He wasn't blessed with a 6-foot-5 frame or a 280-pound frame. He just seemed blessed with what he had. What he's done is, he's realized that and found himself in the gym getting extremely strong and working his way into a new role,” he said.

“It's going to be a learning curve for him, but I think with his ability and his determination and dedication I think he's going to do quite well.”

Quarterback Wil Ansell and defensive lineman Tyson Hulgan have also committed to CJFL teams. Ansell is heading down Highway 11 to join the Saskatoon Hilltops, while Hulgan will be playing for the B.C. Valley Huskers.
