City Hall in Downtown Moose Jaw.

They were presented with the proposed budget at the end of November and on Monday night they start going through the binder, page by page.

Moose Jaw City Councillors start discussing the operating budget Monday and are looking at a proposed 3.92 percent mill rate increase.  To put that into perspective, it's worth an extra $50-a-year on your property taxes for every $100,000 your property is worth.

While there is room for cuts and changes to be made, Mayor Glenn Hagel is saying there is little chance of avoiding some sort of tax increase this spring.

Inflation and wages are putting the most pressure on the budget this with 66 percent of expenditures at City Hall are related to wages paid to employees.

The proposed increase comes on the heals of a 5.9% increase in 2011.

Later this month, the capital budget talks are expected to start and that will give us a better look at how much will need to be spent on the hospital.
