The ballot for Moose Jaw City Council just got a little bit longer. Terry Coleman, our former Police Chief who left to become the Deputy Minister of Corrections and Public Safety when the Saskatchewan Party won the last election, has announced his intention to run for council in next months civic election.

Coleman says it's the simple things he hopes to address during the campaign. "I'm quite familiar with the issues here and I want to make a contribution. That sounds rather cliche and I realize that. What I'm really concerned about is community wellness. Community wellness means more than just health in the traditional sense. It means everything from recreation to responsible progress and safety."

Back in 2008, while serving as the Deputy Minister of Corrections and Public Safety for the Brad Wall Government, Coleman was suspended when some prisoners were accidentally released from jail and there were some communications issues that were raised.  He was then made the Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs before resigning in June.

With Coleman announcing his intentions to run in the election we now have three candidates for the six council positions up for grabs in next months election. Coleman, Mary-Dell Findlay and Regina Sagal-Hendry. Ernie Penney is the only confirmed candidate for mayor while we expect to hear what former Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel plans to do on Friday.

If you are planning or even just thinking about running for council or mayor, there are two dates that you need to know. Nominations officially open on Monday, although you can pick up your paperwork today to get a head start. In order for your name to be on the ballot, you need to file that paperwork by no later than Wednesday, Sept 30th.  We vote, October 28th.
