Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz

The federal government is celebrating a win in the courts this week.  The Court of Appeal has ruled in their favour saying Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz did not break the law when they got rid of the Canadian Wheat Board's monopoly over western farmers.

You may remember a Manitoba judge ruled last year that the ag office acted against legislation when they didn't hold a producer plebiscite before removing the CWB's powers over the market.  A court case launched by former directors of the board.

But the federal judge ruled there was nothing in the law that prevents parliament from changing it's own laws. Changes to the wheat board take effect on August 1st.
