Great Western Railway in Shaunavon aims to increase the number of freight car loads of grain out of the local area.

Last year, they over over five thousand grain car loads for export off of their shortline railway.

Andrew Glastetter is the General Manager of Great Western Railway.

"We've been focused on the last year or two on diversifying our business. We have a strong core here of grain, obviously in this country. It's a pocket of some of the best quality durum in the country - a lot of pulse crops, a lot of large farming operations. Most of our shareholders are from the farming side of the business, so that's always going to be the core business."

Glasetter said they diversify the business by providing car storage for various industries, moving used motor oil for processing and other shipping for the energy sector.

Great Western Railway is Saskatchewan's largest shortline railway and operates on over 450 miles of track.

"We serve the largest number of producer car loading sites of any shortline railway, so numbers-wise, we're right where we want to be," Glastetter said.
