Wakamow Valley Authority is looking for volunteers of all ages to help them with their annual clean up of the valley on Sunday, May 5.

“It will start at Kiwanis Pavilion from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.,” said Donna MacQuarrie-Bye, general manager with Wakamow Valley Authority.

“We offer an opportunity for everybody to get involved and make our park shine.”

MacQuarrie-Bye said that they will have garbage bags and gloves available, and they have some garbage pickers, too. “If people have their own safety vests that would be a big plus.”

One area of particular focus is the heavily used Kinsmen-Wellesley Pavilion. “We’re just hoping for a really good turnout, and that we’ll be able to get more of the park covered this year, as we have in previous years.”

The cleanup of Wakamow Valley will be on the same day as the city-wide Community Clean Up Committee event, which MacQuarrie-Bye said was by design. “It’s nice to be able to do it as all one big event throughout the entire city, just to ensure there’ll be a lot of volunteers to come out and help.”

She hopes that it gives people a chance to build community. “A sense that they belong to the valley, they have something invested into the valley. It takes this community to ensure the safety and the wellbeing and the overall aesthetics of the valley as well.”

Signing up ahead of time is not required, but if you call the Authority to let them know your group is coming, it will give them an idea of how work can be allocated between the various groups.
