They're harmful to oceans, wildlife, and the environment in general, single-use plastics are starting to be left behind all around the world. The Moose Jaw Youth Advisory Committee is working to eliminate them in the city.

Ha'Keena Maneso is chair of the committee, she explained what was proposed to City Council last year.

"What we wanted to do was give an alternative so instead of taking away plastic bags and then leaving people without something to use. We wanted to create something that could replace them and that is equally as useful but is also environmentally friendly. We found Bio Bags and they are a compostable bag."

Maneso continued, "We were thinking of waiting for the federal laws to ban single-use plastics before we went into that a little bit more."

The federal government did announce in 2019 that it would ban single-use plastics as early as 2021.

Prince Albert was the first to take the plunge as it was the first Saskatchewan City to ban plastic bags on January 27th.
