On Sunday June 26th, the Moose Jaw Multicultural Council held a day of events and activities at the Crescent Park Amphitheater honor of World Refugee Day.

People young and old came to the park to learn about and participate in activities that taught them about the living conditions and struggles refugees face when living in refugee camps.

Palliser Heights student Kamyrn Robinson explained what she learnt that day.

"I've learned how the refugee's live and what they make to survive and get their food. And... how heavy their water is when they have to carry it for miles."

Activities included a virtual refugee story, traditional bead making, a mock camp, life jacket memorial for refugees who crossed the Mediterranean Sea, a world flag learning and coloring station, a water jug carrying relay, and an authentic rations supper of rice and beans.

Sisters Ellie and Katie Rogers said that their favorite activity was learning how to make the beads from strips of paper and turning them into bracelets.

Moose Javian Keri Fox said the most inspirational part for her and her children was listening to the virtual refugee story.

"I have my daughter (here) with me, she's fourteen, and we've talked about this a lot but not in that way. We've talked about refugees and why they've come, and kind of some of the things... that we just read on the internet about what they had to go through. But this kind of gave them (a) more real-life... explanation... It's so unimaginable. I realize that we are privileged living here but then having listened to that is just a whole (different) level... so I think it was really important for her and I to go through (it) together, because she got a whole new perspective on it as well."

A giant poster with the words: "We Stand With Refugees", was also present and added to during the event with the painted footprints of people who attended the event.

The event ended with a movie screening of "The Good Lie" at the Moose Jaw Art Gallery.
