Early Friday, winter weight season started on a number of secondary highways in Saskatchewan.

Winter weight season normally starts in mid-November but was delayed this year due to milder temperatures. As roadbeds freeze, secondary weight highways can have the same strength as primary weight highways. This allows for trucks to carry 15 to 20 percent more weight on those highways in the winter than they would in other seasons.

The status for secondary highways is updated often by the provincial government, as they are dependent on temperatures. If roadbeds start to soften and remain so, winter weights could be removed in some areas.

Commercial truckers and shippers are encouraged to check the status of the winter weights on a regular basis. You can get the details by calling 511, visiting the Highway Hotline and trucking weights page on the government website, or following the #skweights hashtag on Twitter.
