The mild weather this fall has resulted in the provincial government delaying the start of winter weights on secondary highways.

"In an effort to protect the province's roads, the winter weight program has been postponed until there is adequate freezing," Highways Minister Fred Bradshaw said. "Winter weight season allows shippers to haul heavier loads on secondary-highways and cost savings for the industry."

Winter weights typically start on November 16th each year, and continue until mid-March, as conditions allow. The freezing temperatures strengthen the roadbeds, which allows for additional weights. Generally, winter weights allow up to 15-20 percent more weight for the secondary highways than what can be moved during the summer months.

Municipal roads are the responsibility of rural municipalities, and they set their own weight limits.
