A question often heard around Moose Jaw is typically "when is the next concert?" or "why don't we have anymore concerts lined up"?

The Downtown Facility and Field House (DFFH) Board met last Thursday to discuss the future of not only the concert bowl and hockey rink, but also the field house, soccer fields and curling rink as well.

With a short and brief meeting before going in camera, that same question was brought up again by the board, with Jodie Beler on behalf of the Mosaic Place stating that there is a lot in the works right now, and they do have a few shows booked for 2019 that just haven't been announced yet.

"We're always looking for shows and events to (host). One thing we're aware of is that it's slowed down considerably throughout western Canada. If you look at other communities like us, that have places like Mosaic Place, there's been a real slow down in the amount of shows. But we're hoping to counter that really soon," explained Board Chair and City Councillor Brian Swanson. "If you look at Medicine Hat and smaller communities like ours, there's just not the events there was a couple years ago. I think that's a reflection of western Canada, but we're figuring out ways to change that."

It wasn't long ago that the decision was made to adjust the way we were working with talent and companies trying to bring acts in. Unlike before, Mosaic Place can now be rented out meaning that the facility has none of the risk when an event takes place, but it also won't see any of the reward either.

"There's different ways you can have an event. You can rent the facility to a promoter, you can enter into a co-promotion with a promoter where there's a sharing of risk, or sometimes you can take on all the risk. There's a whole sliding scale; a lot has to do with who's on tour and what's available."

The next DFFH board meeting with be Thursday, August 9th.
