As the weather begins to cool off for the season, the Wakamow Valley Authority is getting prepared to meet the winter months.

Winterization in Wakamow will be underway in the park beginning this week, and Todd Johnson, general manager, says it's a bit of a process.

"We've got a number of washrooms that are in trailer settings, so we've got to try to winterize those. So that would be emptying the water out and of course, clearing the lines so that they're not going to crack over the winter when it gets cold. So we've got three of those that we have to do that to, as well we have the whole campground."

Johnson is reminding park users that the only washroom facilities open year-round are the ones located in the Kiwanis River Park Pavilion and Lodge near the skating oval.

"The other ones that would be in Connor's Park, just outside of where the Burger Cabin is located, and another one at Kinsmen Wellesley, those washrooms will be closed for the season."

Johnson said that besides facility winterization, getting ready for winter in Wakamow will also include some tree trimming and general clean up of some of the busier areas.

Of course, the park is open year-round, and Johnson said many of the trails will be ploughed. Snow-shoeing will be offered again, as well as cross country skiing if the conditions allow.

"The crew here does a fantastic job trying to stay on top of clearing off the paths. For me, being here the first year, it is amazing how many people use the paths in the wintertime and of course all seasons. It was really an eye-opener for me to see how many park patrons keep coming back even though there's snow on the ground."
