Troubled by recent events the Wakamow Valley Authority is trying to wrap their heads around the latest string of vandalism that has taken over areas of the park.

Culprits have lit garbage cans on fire, spray painted hateful and racial discriminatory sayings in various places and even destroyed a piece of the newly constructed playground.

"The latest a couple evenings ago, somebody re-damaged the new playground that was just installed in the fall of last year at the Kinsmen-Wellesley Pavilion," explained CEO Margaret Moran. "It's really a shame because it's the little cozy cocoon and that is really a special feature for that playground."

Moran added the cozy cocoon is designed for children on the autism spectrum to have a place to relax if the become too excited while playing in the park.

She said it's devastating as this kind of damaging behavior is the opposite of what the valley represents.

"This valley has always been known as a valley of peace and we come down here to get some serenity. When you're walking over a bridge or along a dam and you see something really offensive it just disturbs the whole serenity of the valley."

She's hoping if residents have seen suspicious activity that they will come forward to help find the people behind the vandalism.

"We have reported all of the incidents of crime, and it is criminal behavior, to the Moose Jaw Police Service and they will be conducting investigations. If somebody has seen anything, we do encourage people and appreciate very much when people see things, that they report it either to ourselves or to the police."

With recent funding cuts to Wakamow Valley, Moran said it's difficult to budget for the replacement of damaged items and to allocate resources to cover up spray paint.
