A new proposed subdivision, River Point Park, which could be built in the River Valley, is causing mixed emotions among residents.

The subdivision would include 29 single-family units and 81 multi-family units and would mark a massive change to the southside of the city.

Todd Johnson, general manager of Wakamow Valley.

"The council's philosophy has kind of changed, and they're now looking for people's input. We're encouraging everyone to call their councilors and let them know how they're feeling about the project. It would be changing the official community plan from 'river conservation district', 'flood-fringe' kind of area, changed to a residential area."

One of the major concerns about the plan is the fact that the area is prone to flooding. Examples have been brought up from the past of the area being evacuated by previous residents after flooding took place. Concerns were also raised about the large pieces of ice that can float ashore when an ice jam takes place.

"For us, we're just worried that if the subdivision goes in and the water that used to sit in that area, where that water could go. We have a lot of things downstream that we're concerned about. If the water doesn't sit in that spot, we are downstream so we're trying to make sure that the capital improvements and capital things we put money into for the park are protected. That's where we're at."

Now, a public consultation will take place, and more time will be given to the Wakamow Valley Authority to review the plan. School divisions will also have an opportunity to provide comments.
