As we head into summer, we can once again expect extreme weather including tornadoes.

Just this past week, a funnel cloud was seen just northwest of Moose Jaw. The video below was taken by Karma Klassen, who lives just south of the Village of Marquis.

So, what should you do if there is a tornado in your area? Here are some tips from the American Red Cross.

First, know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. A watch will be issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada when conditions make it possible for a tornado to form. A warning means a tornado is imminent and you should take precautions immediately. During an emergency, listen to your local news for the latest information.

To prepare for tornado season, identify a safe spot in your house for you, your family and pets. Typically, basements, storm cellars or an interior room on the lowest level with no windows.

If you live in a high-rise apartment building, take shelter in a hallway near the centre of the building if you can’t make it to the lowest level.

For those living in a mobile home, find a sturdy shelter or a vehicle and be sure to have your seatbelt on if you are driving.

Your family should have an evacuation plan in place and it should be communicated with everyone in the family. The communication plan should also include what to do if you get separated.

You should also have an emergency preparedness kit that includes a battery-powered radio and spare batteries, a flashlight, a first aid kit and 72-hours worth of water and non-perishable food.
