Vanier Collegiate's Health Science 20 Class took an elightening field trip to Canadian Light Source (CLS) in Saskatoon recently (June 9).

CLS is a national research facility that produces the brightest light in Canada - millions of times brighter than the sun - that is used by over 1,000 scientists around the world for research in the areas of health, environment, agriculture and more.

11 Grade 10 and 11 students from Vanier used the light to analyze fruit and vegetables.

"We're doing a nutrition unit right now," said Grade 11 student Mac Kouri. "This helped us to learn about what we are putting in our bodies, the minerals we need and the minerals that are in each food."

Vanier teacher Miguel Cruz says he was quick to register the students once he learned of the program.

"Giving any student the opportunity to experience science and be involved in a facility where scientists are working is pretty cool," said Cruz. "Professionals taking the time out of their day to work with the students is great."

About 180 Saskatchewan students have participated in the Light Source Student Experience this spring.
