Today is Valentine's Day. A day to show your love and support to those most special in your life.

Many people go out for dinner, some buy presents, but flowers seem to be the gift of choice year after year.

How do flower stores manage? Evans Florist Owner/Operator Tina Couzens says today is by far the busiest day of the year and says they have to prepare the flowers and bouquets days in advance.

"We've been working this week so that we've got some stuff ready for cash and carry for the guys to run in - and they do - they run and say "I forgot!" because they're all working and they don't think about it until the calendar lands on the day and someone at work says "it's Valentines Day," and suddenly everyone is running."

With all of that extra work, Couzens had to call in some extra staff.

"I've got 5 extra staff right now downstairs in the basement doing the pre-greening and the pre-flowering of the long-lasting flowers. I have 4 or 5 extra salespeople, my bookkeeper comes in and my sister is even coming in this year to wrap."

If you are one of the many who will be purchasing flowers today as a gift, you can add some extra prestige to the present knowing the flowers are brought in from all around the world.

"Roses come from Ecuador, Guatemala, South America. We get some from BC but a lot come from overseas, Israel, orchids from Holland, we have an orchid grower in BC, we also have Africa, Australia. A lot of our greenery comes from different countries."

This is the 30th Valentine's Day Couzens has worked at Evans Florist.
