As the world takes some time to recognize Valentine's Day and all the emotions that go with it, health professionals are hoping that we pay attention to our real heart, not just the ones on cards and cakes. February is heart month, a time when health officials urge residents to stay healthy and spread awareness.

"Heart disease is the second (leading) cause of death in Canada." said Head of the Intensive Care Unit at the Wigmore Hospital, Dr. Fauzi Ramadan. "Some risks that lead to heart disease are smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes."

"If we can reduce these risks, we can keep the heart healthy and maintain it for a longer period of time."

Nine in ten Canadians live with at least one risk factor for heart disease
