Learning from one of the worst natural disasters in recent Canadian history, Moose Jaw Fire Chief Rod Montgomery is looking back at his time hearing for former Fort McMurray Fire Chief Darby Allen. The retired firefighter was the guest speaker at last week's Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs Annual Meetings.

Montgomery says they learned about how the massive evacuation worked so well and what they can use here at home. "Work on your emergency management plan and have methods of communication for the community." said Montgomery. "Twitter, Facebook, DiscoverMooseJaw.com, SaskAlert, the new MooseJawLive App... all those things come into play."

While that presentation was very informative and will help other fire departments prepare, Montgomery says their minds were on something else. "Everything got overshadowed by the Humboldt bus crash and there was a lot of talk on that."

"It was a very tragic event but the response and the system that's built in through out the province, it went very well. Certainly, we wish the outcome would have been different but the response was spot on and you really have to commend them."

Our Chief says they'll take some of the pointers from the conference and tweak their own response plan, saying there's always room for improvement.
