A rough introduction to driving happened for several individuals in Saskatchewan last month.

Police issued 79 tickets to new drivers and motorcyclists who weren't following the rules in June as part of the province-wide Traffic Safety Spotlight.

Tyler McMurchy, the manager of media relations with SGI, said they have a message for young drivers.

"Our message to them was we want them out there in the roads practicing and sharpening their skills, experiencing different types of traffic conditions on different kinds of roads," he explained. "But we also want them to make sure they pay attention to their restrictions and their requirements outlined on their driver's licenses."

Over half of the tickets (46 of them) were issued for driving without a supervising driver, 25 tickets were for not following the restrictions or riding without the appropriate endorsement, five tickets were for driving a vehicle while under 16 without authorization, and three tickets were for not displaying the appropriate 'L' (Learner) or 'N' (Novice) placard on their motorcycle.

"It's very important that drivers obey the restrictions they have, so that when they do become that experienced driver they have the good habits and the lessons ingrained in them," McMurchy said.

Law enforcement also reported 375 impaired driving offences (including 319 criminal code charges) and 567 distracted driving offences (467 for cellphone use while driving) in June.
