Taking a look back at 2018 for our top 10 stories of the year, we now reach number 6 - which saw Moose Jaw say goodbye to a prominent member of City Council. Our 6th biggest local story of the year; the retirement of Don Mitchell.

Serving the community dating back to the 1970s, Mitchell served for decades on Council as both Mayor and Councillor.

"I've been part of civic politics since 1972, the first by-election I ran into. The involvement of the community, their engagement, their concern on issues, their questions have all taught me a lot and given me direction"

Mitchell said goodbye to City Council with an emotional speech, thanking the citizens of Moose Jaw.

"I'm very proud of this community and its political history. People stand up for themselves, they are determined to be listened to, and they speak out, vote, and keep in contact with their councillors".

It was revealed at the time that Mitchell decided to step down in order to care for his ailing wife.

"I also want to thank my wife and partner for her many years of support. She actually ran for council and got more votes than I did in 1973, and she's been part and active in this community all that time providing support for me, and its my turn now. Thank you."

The following by-election, held in October, saw Heather Eby elected to fill the empty seat in council chambers.

"I'm just really looking forward to getting back up to speed on the things that this council has been working on the past few years" said Eby at her first council meeting after being re-elected, "I just want to thank the citizens of Moose Jaw for re-electing me. I've really felt their support over the last 2 years of not being here, and certainly their support at the polls".

Eby lost her initial seat on council to Dawn Luhning in 2016, but in this years by-election after 3162 total votes, she came out as the clear winner.
