While out and about trick-or-treating throughout Moose Jaw, some may think candy is the number one priority on Halloween night.

The true priority for parents is the safety of their children. That's why CAA Saskatchewan wants to remind everyone, whether you're out trick or treating, or driving on the roads filled with trick-or-treaters, stay safe and watch the road.

This year the focus is to 'see and be seen', advising trick or treaters and drivers to watch out for one another while out on Halloween night. It is advised for trick-or-treaters to wear bright costumes that don't obstruct their vision and to trick-or-treat in groups as it is safer and more visible to drivers.

"When crossing the street, use designated intersections and crosswalks, be sure to stop, look, listen and think," said Christine Niemczyk, Director of Communications with CAA Saskatchewan. "Use reflective tape on costumes, have children carry a flashlight for easy visibility, and look both ways before crossing the road."

If you are driving and must drop off or pick up children, be sure to pull over into a safe zone and turn on your vehicle hazard lights. Communicate with other drivers by using your turn signals and make sure your vehicle's headlights are turned on.

"Watch for excited children walking or running, as they may not be thinking of road safety," Niemczyk noted.

It is not only for safety, but it is also illegal to use a mobile phone while driving. Put it away or out of reach to avoid the temptation of using it. And of course, if you plan to drink you should also plan to have a safe ride home. Never drive while intoxicated.

CAA launched a Halloween School Zone Safety Colouring Contest open to children 14 and younger. Two grand prizes are being awarded, a Mickey Mouse carry-on suitcase and a Minnie Mouse carry-on suitcase. You can see all the details and enter the contest here.
