Moran started off as a professional hairstylist in the early 80's and then made the switch to instructor and business owner. He said opening The Academies was hard work but it was also "creative, it (tested his) skills", and it also made him take a lot of pride in his work.

Moran said he did try to get his son, who is a stylist in Martensville, to take over the business, but was unsuccessful.

"It was just monetary thing. He just makes more money behind (the) chair than... running a school".

But Moran won't be quitting the industry completely, saying he will be working in a former student's salon a few days every week.

However, closing down a cosmetology business after 3 decades leaves an owner with a lot of leftover equipment, so Moran is planning to have a huge garage sale for all of salon's equipment and decorations in September.
