The Saskatchewan Teachers Federation announced this morning that despite talks with the provincial government, the teacher's bargaining committee will be implementing sanctions beginning this Thursday.

Under the Restriction of Services sanction, the federation said all members will continue to provide students with the best possible learning opportunities, but no more than 15 minutes prior to or at the end of the school day.

Student supervision will still be provided during recess and lunch, however, no voluntary or extracurricular services will be provided,

"Any volunteer services they provide over the lunch hour as well will be eliminated," said STF president Patrick Maze.

Maze says the government is unwilling to provide adequate support for students, and that while they admit there is a problem, they refuse to address it.

He said they have met with the finance minister and minister of education and Maze said their offer was "ridiculously low" and a "non-starter."

"It’s rural, urban, northern, everywhere and it’s basically caused by chronic underfunding from the government over the last several years. Teachers have finally said enough is enough," Maze said.

Sanctions will remain in place until further notice.

"We do still have other sanctions available to us, but at this point, we hope that it’ll help the government to understand how serious we deem this situation and that they’ll come to the table with some meaningful supports to help our students," Maze said.
