A partnership between Journey to Hope and a local resident has created a new initiative with the goal of reducing the amount of people losing their lives due to suicide.

They're called Suicide Help Cards and will be offered in various locations throughout the city thanks to Keon Garden Centre, who reached out to Journey to Hope asking from more information to offer people who were struggling.

"She had people come to her in crisis and she was just not exactly sure of where to go (or) how to offer resources," explained Della Ferguson, Spokesperson for Journey to Hope. " She (a Keon representative) said, 'I just feel like in our community we need to have something that can be at peoples finger tips so that they can know where to support someone in going'."

"We have put these cards together, we have ordered several thousand and we already have 50 businesses who have these cards available. We are inviting all businesses and organizations, please... Let`s get this information out there so that people can know that hope is available and they do not have to suffer alone."

Journey to Hope spread the message of "you're not alone" all year round to people in need, and aim to end the stigma around mental illness.

Ferguson said creating new ways to offer help to people is something they strive for, as dealing with a mental illness can be difficult.

"Our thinking can go to very dark places and can be very depressing. Any immediate sign of sense that someone might be there who can help me deal with these thoughts. It`s timely, it`s necessary. We want people to know, do not suffer alone. There is hope and help available."

She also added that anyone interested in acquiring the cards can contact Journey to Hope.
