On Tuesday afternoon approximately 75 Moose Jaw citizens attended a workshop to discuss street gangs, as well as gang activity.

Str8 Up is an organization based out of Saskatoon that helps improve the lives of both former and current gang members.

Jorgina Sunn, who is now Str8 Up's program coordinator, is one person they've helped in the past, and has nothing but praise for Str8 Up and the approach they take to recovery.

"It wasn't that I went to Str8 Up and I attended the program and got well, they gave me the understanding that if I wanted to get well it was completely going to be my choice and I was going to have to be the one to put in the effort."

Sunn and Str8 Up came to Moose Jaw on Tuesday to host a workshop regarding the problem of street gangs as well as gang activity.

Str8 Up is currently heading all over the province having these workshops in order to collect data and recommendations for their provincial plan, which is called 'The Saskatchewan Provincial Street Gang Strategy'.

Str8 Up lead coordinator Robert Henry explained their plan is for the Saskatchewan Provincial Street Gang Strategy.

"The document will be ready by August 31st and then we're going to be launching it back out to the communities so they can see it, understand it, and if they have any recommendations on how to move forward or changes they would like to see. This is an opportunity for them to give back. They can also sign off on it and say 'here we go. Here's the recommendations we put forward to the province of Saskatchewan, government of Saskatchewan, and we want to hold you accountable. We have this document now, how do we move forward?'"

Through coming to smaller communities, Str8 Up hopes to gain a more accurate representation of what gang activity is like in Saskatchewan.

The supervisor and acting director at the Transition House, Marlene Borthwick, was in attendance with her staff at the workshop abd says she's glad they're coming to smaller cities.

"It's very important for Moose Jaw to have a workshop like this, because we're a smaller city and we find we have a lot of the gangs coming from Regina and Saskatoon to Moose Jaw because it's the smaller place. We don't know enough about how they are run or anything about the gangs, really."

Str8 Up will be working hard compiling all of the data they received in order to have the Saskatchewan Provincial Street Gang Strategy completed and ready to be sent out towards the end of the summer.
