The first real taste of winter came to many parts of the province Wednesday, and that continued into the morning Thursday.

Communities along Yellowhead Highway, which runs from the Alberta to Manitoba border, and to the north, received upwards of 15 centimetres of snow, with snowfall warnings being issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Official numbers from ECCC for many communities were not available, however, early Thursday morning.

The system is expected to linger around for part of the day Thursday, bringing up to eight more centimetres of snow for communities such as Humboldt, Melfort and Nipawin. Other parts of the province are expected to see up to five centimetres.

The snow has resulted in the majority of the highways in Saskatchewan experiencing winter driving conditions. Along the Trans-Canada between Moose Jaw and Regina, first responders have been to the scene of a number of accidents, with semis leaving the road due to slick conditions. As well, travel is not recommended in some areas of the province as well.

The exception has been areas in the southwest and west-central parts of the province.
