With the City of Moose Jaw's Proposed byaw changes, many things could be impacting local pedestrians.

Among the proposed changes are two that stand out - one being that children under the age of 18 would be required to wear bicycle helmets, and the second that skateboards, scooters, and roller blades would not be allowed to be used on Main Street.

This would impact those who use self-propelled forms of transportation on Main Street from Manitoba Street and continue north until Saskatchewan on all sidewalks and roads. These potential changes have led to many locals forming their opinion on these two topics, one of whom is a local business owner.

Brittan Calibaba, Owner of New Board Shop, sells skateboards from his store. His business is located in the middle of where the restriction would be in place. He explained the importance that riding brings to many locals in the community. "Not everyone can afford a vehicle or even a bike, so if you're on foot or a skateboard, I think that they should encourage people to not use vehicles as much and make it more accessible for people rather than deter them from using other methods."

While Calibaba believes that the relationship between riders and the City hasn't always been great, "As a skateboarder, and from our skateboarding community, it seems like the City doesn't really want to help us out at all. If anything has to do with skateboarding it seems like they have a sour taste towards skateboarders, which I find isn't really fair."

With such a specific location where riding would not be allowed, many including Calibaba are questioning how the bylaws would be policed.

"What if someone is skating from down Fairford Street and they have to cross Main Street... do you have to take off your roller blades or get off your board to walk across the street? I feel it's going to be pretty hard to police and I think the city should worry about other stuff rather than trying to keep kids off of skateboards."
