Now that the summer season has arrived, and the kids are out of school many will be heading out on the road for a number of summer road trips.

SGI wants to remind drivers to stay safe on busy roads.

Tyler McMurchy, Manager of Media Relations for SGI details the four major causes of concern.

"We always talk about the big four which are distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and improper seatbelt use because one of these four factors or more is present in more than 80% of the traffic fatalities we see in Saskatchewan."

McMurchy adds that if drivers get their mindset around those four items this will go a long way towards making themselves and other drivers a lot safer on the roads.

Along with the summer season comes construction season and McMurchy advises drivers to be cautious.

"You're going to see a lot of orange around the province no matter where you go. When you're seeing those orange zones you want to keep in mind the people who are working in them, that's their workplace. We want to give them the respect and do what we can to keep them safe as their building our roadways and our infrastructure to help ensure we have those safe travels as we make our way around the province."

Drivers are asked to slow down in highway work zones to 60 kilometres per hour and if they fail to do so they will be facing expensive fines. A reminder when two lanes become one in a construction zone, drivers are encouraged to embrace the zipper merge where vehicles fill both lanes until the merge point and then alternate in a zipper fashion into the ongoing lane.

McMurchy says they are also still seeing a lot of people not wearing their seatbelts. Over the past three months through traffic safety spotlights, an average of more than 500 people have been caught per month. Seatbelts help to reduce the chance of being injured or killed by as much as 50%.
