Last holiday season, between December 1st and January 3rd, three people were killed, as a result of impaired driving-related collisions in Saskatchewan, and another 44 people were injured.

Manager of Media Relations with SGI, Tyler McMurchy said it's time to have a conversation with our loved ones about the dangers of impaired driving.

And what better way to convince others to do something cool, than to take advantage of local (-to-us) influencers?

SGI talked to a few of their friends and received video messages from notable names, including community leaders, athletes, and entertainers.

"We asked a number of prominent Saskatchewan residents to tell us why they always plan a safe ride home, and they shared videos with us in their own words about why it's important to them," he explained. "Everybody will do it for a different reason, and it's really just important that they always make a plan for a safe ride home, whatever their reason is."

As in many years past, impaired driving is a special focus of law enforcement for the month of December as the Traffic Safety Spotlight.

McMurchy emphasized, it's almost always a deliberate choice made by someone who probably knew they were going out drinking.

"It's 100 per cent preventable, so when you see any number of collisions that cause injuries or fatalities, we know that that was something that was preventable."

"We know that people are going to be getting together and experiencing the holidays together with their friends, so that might include, of course, gatherings that will involve alcohol or recreational cannabis, or maybe other drugs as well," he noted.

Some tips to help ensure you make the correct choice this holiday season are arranging to have a designated driver for your group (or volunteering to be one); taking a cab, a rideshare, or a designated driving service that brings you and your vehicle home; using public transit; staying the night.

SGI will be sharing the video messages over the next month on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
