Regenerative agriculture is something many of us have heard of, but not many understand. Luckily, a presentation is being held in Gravelbourg Wednesday evening to discuss the process, its benefits, and how farmers can take part.

The Gravelbourg Economic Development Office will host the presentation along with Brian Hjertaas, a Soil Health Consultant with Understanding Agriculture, and a Saskatchewan farmer with 45 years experience. He explains the importance of regenerative agriculture.

"What regenerative agriculture does is it begins to rebuild soil organic matter. Over the last 120-130 years of farming we've taken a lot of the organic matter out of our soils by the way we farmed, our knowledge wasn't good enough. What regenerative agriculture does is it turns it around."

"Basically there are 5 principles; to minimize your tillage, use diversity, keep your land covered up with litter we call it - or armour, keep it green longer, and if you can integrate animals into the system. Each farmer can look at that and there is no right or wrong, just practice the principles and it will work."

For farmers, getting involved with regenerative agriculture would mean the requirement for input goes down, food quality goes up, and better yields.

"10 years ago none of this was known. We haven't understood it very well and as this knowledge becomes available to us it makes us realize that if we change the way we farm just a little bit we can make huge gains in our soil health. Soil health gives us crop health which gives us human health."

The presentation will be held at the Centre Culturel Maillard in Gravelbourg on Wednesday at 7 pm. It only costs $10 per person or $15 per farm unit to attend.
