Senior's week kicks off in Moose Jaw on Monday with a Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 10 at the Timothy Eaton Gardens.

The week is a part of the Moose Jaw and District Seniors Association's partnership with Age Friendly Saskatchewan to name Moose Jaw as an "age-friendly" community. Additionally, Age Friendly Saskatchewan will be conducting a survey for all residents aged 50+ as a part of their plan.

Angela Serada, a paramedic who works with the organization, explains just what Age Friendly Saskatchewan is.

"It's basically a global movement to engage older Canadians in their communities with the goal of making their communities safer for all people to live and thrive and 'age in place,' meaning we want people to be in their homes and communities for a lot longer so that they don't have to go into nursing homes."

In order for Moose Jaw to achieve this status, three milestones have to be reached.

  1. Set up an Age Friendly committee with members who represent many different sectors within the community
  2. Get support and funding from the city administration
  3. Assess the community and identify how age-friendly it is so that an action plan can be developed on what changes need to be proposed

The first two milestones have already been reached here in Moose Jaw and the survey will cover the final stage.

"We're hoping many of the 50+ citizens in Moose Jaw will fill it out. It can be done online and many businesses will also have copies of the survey."

The survey will also be conducted at the Timothy Eaton Gardens along with all their other events celebrating seniors this week.
