Moose Jaw's Scott Benson Band woke up to a bit of a surprise over the weekend after discovering one of their songs was used in a 2020 promotional TikTok for a Connor McGregor/Donald Cerrone fight.

While it was a surprise in itself that UFC Europe was using their cover of the song 'Requiem for a Dream', the number of views is what really caused a shock.

Here's producer and band member, Jared Robinson.

"That video alone had over 700,000 views, and after looking around, just with that stream, it looked like we were over and above 10 million. I looked into it further and it looks like it's been used for over 4,400 other videos. In total, the song has been streamed over TikTok 40 to 50 million times."

The Scott Benson Band has been well known in Moose Jaw and area for a number of years now, and is made up of 5 members; Scott Benson on the violin and fiddle, Jared Dormer on drums, Cameron Church on bass, Andrew Fath on guitar, and Robinson playing keyboard and handling production duties.

While having that type of exposure for one of their songs is fantastic, Robinson says they, unfortunately, most likely won't see any pay from it.

"You've got a song that's cut in half between the songwriters and the publishers. In this case, we would own the publishing on our version of this song but unfortunately for us, the writer of the song, Clint Mansell, would be the one that is collecting all of the writer's royalties for it. He's probably got a nice little cheque coming his way."

You can listen to the Scott Benson Band through Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and other streaming services. While Robinson admits that streaming services in Canada have a long way to go in their support of artists, he believes good things are coming.
