Another $37.5 million in funding from the COVID contingency fund was approved for school divisions across the province Thursday. The money is intended for emergent, one-time expenses in schools aimed at keeping staff and students safe.

There were 51 applications approved from school divisions, qualified independent schools and historic high schools approved in the funding. The money included funds for sanitization, equipment and furniture, remote learning resources, technology upgrades and other costs.

Some of the upgrades which were approved include audio amplification systems to help students hear when teachers are wearing a mask and the purchase of additional computers. Other costs being covered in this round of funding include mental health and community liaison supports.

“Our more than $37 million funding commitment, which is in addition to the $51 million we approved in the fall, will provide divisions with the resources necessary to keep our schools safe,” Education Minister Dustin Duncan said. “This funding will provide for additional cleaning supplies, supports for online learning and the more than 400 staff that have been hired through the first phase of funding.”

It was also confirmed the school divisions would not have their operating grants adjusted based on actual enrolments for the 2020-21 school year. This means funding will be based on projected enrolments, and there will not be a decrease in funding.
