Taking steps to become greener, one of Saskatchewan's Crown corporations is switching to paperless billing.

SaskTel made the announcement on Thursday saying that a portion of customers will make the switch as soon as March 27th, with other areas gradually moving that direction as well throughout the rest of the year.

“SaskTel has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the past ten years and we are committed to reducing the environmental footprint caused by our monthly bills,” said Doug Burnett, SaskTel President, and CEO in a written statement.  “Every year, over 36 million pieces of paper are used to send customer bills and along with the environmental benefits there are significant cost savings associated with decreasing the number of paper bills we send.”

The change will be done in various phases, starting with customers who have a mySaskTel profile but have yet to choose the paperless option, and the next phase will be aimed at customers with internet access.

“We also realize in some instances due to personal circumstances customers require a paper version of their bill and we will provide customers with this option if that is their preference,” added Burnett.

Officials noted that the only portion of their customers who won't see their account switched to paperless would be those who have business services or have voice access only without an internet connection.

Everyone included in the change over will be receiving notice prior to the switch.
