With the chilly weather of fall just a few weeks away, furnaces across the province will soon be rumbling to life, adding to your monthly ultimate bill.

This can be a huge burden for low-income families, so SaskPower is introducing their Energy Assistance Program.

Successful applicants will receive free installation of money and energy-saving devices such as smart thermostats and LED lightbulbs.

Scott McGregor, media relations consultant with SaskPower, describes the benefits of a smart thermostat.

"With a smart thermostat, you're able to heat or cool your house only when you need it and only as much as you need. With the old style of thermostats, you have to just set the temperature and then that's just what it is until you change it again. So, you can set it to a schedule or adjust from your phone while you're on vacation."

He explains how installing LED light bulbs can save customers money in the long run.

"Lighting accounts for about seventeen per cent of your home electricity cost so to reduce the consumption that your lights are using is a huge step."

The upgrades also include mart power strips, a clothing dryer rack, high-efficiency showerheads, and faucet aerators. All these upgrades can significantly reduce the pressures that high utility bills can place on individuals with a low income.

"On average, we're seeing a savings of about a $230 per year. When you're able to save costs across the board - be it through the climate control, lighting, etc. - those savings definitely start adding up."

The program has limited space so you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. To see if you qualify, click here.
