The City of Moose Jaw has been working closely with SaskPower over the past few months to try and come up with a solution to the ever-growing problem of streetlights not working around the city.

"There's streetlights on Main Street, and the street lights are combination of SaskPower owned street lights and ones owned by the City of Moose Jaw. We've been working together on a plan, a plan to continue lighting the downtown," explained Jordan Jackle, a spokesperson with SaskPower.

"In some cases it will be a situation where the actual light itself has failed, but there is also situations where it's a power supply issue. For example, an underground cable feeding the street light there could be an equipment malfunction with that cable and it could knock out a street light or more than one, especially if it is an underground cable fault or something along that line."

However, Moose Jaw's downtown isn't the only area where residents may have some trouble navigating because it is too dark.

"We are looking at how, especially in the North West part of the city, how we can prevent outages there. It's relatively treed and what we run into is situations where our overhead wires from streetlight to streetlight will touch a branch and they will trip, and knock out a bunch of street lights."

With planning and efforts moving ahead, Saskpower put a call out for lights in our downtown core to be repaired, but after no one bid, they decided to have their own workers complete the project. However, crews were waiting to start until after the holidays, as they didn't want to cause too much congestion on Main Street while residents were out and about shopping and gathering holiday supplies.
